Pamodzi Bio Energy Solutions (PBES) is a start-up set up to increase energy access primarily in the rural part of sub-Saharan Africa. PBES’s solution is to generate clean energy in the form of compressed biogas (CBGs) for cooking and electricity.

Problem

According to data from the International Energy Agency (in 2022), there are 770 Million people without access to electricity worldwide (of that 77% live in sub-Saharan Africa). Additionally, 2.5 billion people are reported to be without access to clean cooking fuel globally. Furthermore, 2.5 million premature deaths occur per year due to household air pollution, mostly from cooking smoke, in the world (with about half a million deaths in sub-Saharan Africa, with women and children being the worst affected). Playing a role in solving this problem is the mission at Pamodzi Bio Energy Solutions.

Solution

Pamodzi Bio Energy Solutions aims to increase energy access by generating clean energy in the form of biogas (primarily from cow dung) compressed into cylinders for cooking and electricity. Then sustainably re-using the slurry/waste for productive use in the agricultural sector (as green manure or compost).

Outcome

The solution entails the productive use of feedstock that is otherwise burnt, thereby contributing to the reduction of GreenHouse Gases (GHG) emissions in the environment - for example, a 24 cubic meter biodigester can reduce the emission of up to 256 kg of Methane(CH4) and 6.4 tons of Carbon Dioxide(CO2) yearly. In addition to this, providing service in the form of generating set conversion from fossil-fuel-powered to biogas-powered will help to further reduce GHG emissions from millions of generating sets used in our target market.

Furthermore, the clean cooking fuel solution will help the rural communities to be less dependent on firewood to meet their daily cooking needs. Reports have shown that the majority of people fetching firewood for cooking are young girls - time spent fetching firewood is valuable time that could be spent focusing on their education. Pamodzi Bio Energy Solutions is committed to contributing to improved quality of life by providing means for attaining quality education.

Finally, a moonshot goal of the company is to provide 10,000 jobs by 2050 (especially targeting the underserved youths in the community).
