The Hamburger Bahnhof (Hamburg Station) in Berlin looked like as a railway station in 1850. After 37 years of service, it was shut down and in 1996, it became a center for contemporary art. This was part of a general effort by the city to restore the Museumsinsel (Museum island) in Berlin to its former glory. The preocess has already seen great successes with the refurbishment and reopening of the Alte Nationalgalerie (in 2001), Bode-Museum (in 2006), and most recently the Neues Museum (in 2009), and is currently still underway with the major refurbishment of the Pergamonmuseum.
