The solution created was a digital passport of each product, which gives the consumer access, from a QR code, to obtain information about the entire product tracking. In this way, the company provides greater visibility to its suppliers (90% are Italian) and informs and educates consumers about sustainable fashion. As a result, the company strengthens its relationship with stakeholders, based on mutual trust, in addition to pursuing its mission of \"respecting the planet and people by promoting a new lifestyle where fashion trends and sustainability can coexist\".
","problem":"
Currently, there are already brands aware of the impact they can have on the environment and society. From this perspective, they seek to bring more sustainable fashion into their mission, incorporating principles of the circular economy. However, in addition to applying sustainable practices throughout the production process, these companies must demonstrate to their consumers which practices they are adopting to be educated and become aware of the importance of sustainable fashion.

In this context, increased transparency and traceability are crucial for a sustainable company to allow the rise of the conscientious consumer. This was the case of Hairuke, which, even having focused on the sustainable production of jeans from the beginning of the brand, realized that they didn't effectively demonstrate this to their clients, which prevented them from adding credibility to their sustainable discourse. Digital technology then became a target of the company, aiming to identify how solutions such as blockchain and IoT could contribute to this greater visibility and transparency of its actions, demonstrating which suppliers acted in which part of the chain and show products and certifications adopted.
","solution":"
The solution adopted by Hairuke occurred through a partnership with technology company Provenance, which developed a solution for tracking the products at the \"proof points\" of their origin, using blockchain technology. The immutable record of these events allowed Hairuke to share evidence of its practices throughout the entire production chain. To view this evidence, the brand's consumer can scan the QR code existing on the clothes, having a digital experience about the product's journey and its suppliers. The website then presents a timeline containing the history of the product's production, demonstrating at each stage the supplier and components used and the certifications obtained, thus bringing increased visibility of the purchased goods.
","outcome":"
As shown by the brand's use case, the approach of bringing greater visibility and transparency to a solution that already practices sustainable actions brings the following results as benefits:

Greater guarantee: This allows the brand to have a relationship of trust with their suppliers and provide more excellent reliability to their consumers through clear information on its sustainable actions.

Consistent communication: This allows the brand, through blockchain technology and digital platforms, to record information in different parts of the value chain, incorporating the details of the production of their products in a single channel.

Differentiation: The brand can identify their sustainable actions, visibility, transparency and traceability, and add competitive advantage, thus generating a more significant positive impact.
","additional_info":"
The solution can be visualised here - (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).\n\nThese different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.\n\nSource: Circle Economy. Using Blockchain technology, the recycled cotton that enters the supply chain can be verified as the same that comes out as apparel.\t AWARE Blockchain Recycled Fabric has just been launched by Dutch startup ‘The Movement’, bringing to market an exciting initiative focused on authenticating the fashion supply chain using blockchain. In a fashion industry where words like “organic”, “fair trade”, and “sustainable” are becoming over-used and under-quantified, this technology offers a future where consumers can know precisely the materials a garment is made from. AWARE™ applies tracer particles to the raw recycled cotton and then uses blockchain to guarantee the material that enters the supply chain is the same that comes out as apparel. By offering validation, transparency and verification to AWARE Blockchain Recycled Fabric, this hybrid technology can work to eliminate greenwashing and establish more trust in the textiles industry. \n\n Recycled Cotton AWARE™ is looking to champion recycled cotton through the AWARE Blockchain Recycled Fabric scheme- in turn, reducing the amount of new cotton required to be produced. It’s estimated that producing 1kg of conventional cotton requires 9,800 litres of water, with the harsh reality that much of the world’s cotton is produced in countries already lacking a ready supply of drinking water. It is estimated that 80% of the cotton required for the fashion industry already exists, with most destined for landfill. The increases in textile recycling schemes can help to save this cotton from reaching landfill, allowing it to be re-purposed into recycled cotton. AWARE™ can then be used to authenticate this process for the end consumer. Blockchain Authenticated Recyled Cotton Blockchain Textile Production The process works with several carefully selected partner spinners adding the patented AWARE™ tracer material into the original recycled feedstock. A virtual representation of the yarn/fibre is then created as a digital token and stored on a de-centralised and open-source blockchain. Brands can now use the yarn in the same way as any other raw fabric. The difference is, that at the end of production the final product can be scanned to confirm it’s made from the original certified recycled materials. AWARE Blockchain Recycled Fabric Scanning This confirmation is then linked to the related digital token stored on blockchain, the original purchase order and the AWARE™ Certificate of Authenticity. All this information will then be transferred to the digital wallet of the retailer or brand, complete with an easy-to-understand blockchain interface documenting all environmental impact savings. AWARE Blockchain Recycled Fabric: The Future Supply chain transparency will become one of the key battlegrounds for fashion businesses striving to become more sustainable. The sustainability of the specific material being used is still up for debate as every fabric has its pros and cons. For the brands, however, being able to conclusively show the end consumer exactly where their product has come from is going to be extremely powerful. Especially when this level of transparency becomes expected across all brands. “There’s a real pressure for change: to make sustainability actually mean something. Everyone realises that ‘sustainability’ is a term that’s if it’s not fully empty, it’s at least vague. Brands and retailers now recognise we need to be measuring impact reduction – in terms of water use, energy, waste, CO2 and all the rest.”Feico van der Veen, Founder and Director, The Movement Further information on the AWARE Blockchain Recycled Fabric can be found https://www.the-movement.com/ Further Reading: Blockchain Sneakers: The Future of Footwear. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.","properties":null,"framework":134,"article":null,"parent":null,"created_at":"2021-03-05T13:34:08.267Z","updated_at":"2022-12-01T12:29:54.260Z","order":null,"icon_alt":null,"summary":null,"icon":null}],"attachments":[],"bookmarks":[],"folders":[],"solutionProviders":[],"contributors":[{"id":383,"firstname":"Jess ","lastname":"Redgrave","picture":"https://s.gravatar.com/avatar/ab902f36ab77f303a96cd4a4fff12634?s=480&r=pg&d=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.auth0.com%2Favatars%2Fj.png"},{"id":420,"firstname":"Sarah","lastname":"Botha","picture":"https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/a-/AOh14GiFoMGXVqypO9TMXxIW8_GJVP1uqNTgQ8XEwSyV=s96-c"}],"localizations":[]},{"id":22550,"title":"CYCLO® and AWARE™ team up to bring fully traceable recycled cotton yarn in Bangladesh","summary":"
Simco Spinning & Textile, exclusive manufacturers of Cyclo recycled fibers in Bangladesh, has entered into a strategic partnership with The Movement (parent company of Aware) to become nominated spinners of the Aware Integrity Solution in Bangladesh.
","problem":"
Modern textiles rely heavily on petrochemical products that come from many of the same oil and gas companies driving greenhouse gas emissions. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).\n\nThese different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.\n\nSource: Circle Economy.
